For a high-volume pizza kitchen, the prep rail cooler is the heart of the line. When it stops holding temperature, product is at risk and the clock starts running. That is exactly the situation Setpoint Services walked into recently at an Austin pizza restaurant, where a commercial rail cooler — the refrigerated prep table that keeps toppings and dough cold — had stopped maintaining safe temperatures.
The Symptom: A Prep Rail That Would Not Stay Cold
The unit was running but not cooling. On arrival, our technician found the refrigeration system completely out of refrigerant and operating in a vacuum — a clear sign of a leak somewhere in the sealed system. A system that has lost its entire charge cannot cool, and running it in that condition risks further damage to the compressor.
Finding and Repairing the Leak
A leak search pinpointed the source at the drain line heater bend, a common stress point on refrigerated prep tables. We repaired the leak, pressure-tested the system to confirm it was sealed, pulled it into a vacuum to remove moisture, and recharged it with R-404A — the refrigerant this system was designed to use.
When One Repair Reveals Another
Refrigeration failures rarely travel alone. As the system came back online, it kept pulling into a vacuum and tripping the low-pressure safety control. Further diagnostics turned up contamination and restrictions inside the refrigerant circuit — the kind of debris that accumulates when a system has run low or open for a while. We flushed the refrigerant lines, installed a new liquid line filter drier, replaced both liquid line solenoid valves and their coils, and fitted a new low-pressure safety switch.

The Real Culprit: A Locked Compressor
With the circuit cleaned up, one problem remained. During testing the compressor was found to be mechanically locked and unable to run — the failure at the root of the whole chain. We installed a new compressor, evacuated the system to a deep vacuum, and recharged it to the factory-specified charge. A final adjustment to the rail evaporator TXV improved refrigerant feed, and rail temperatures dropped back into a safe range. The cooler was holding and operating normally at the end of the visit.

A prep rail is one piece of a larger kitchen. We service the full range of commercial refrigeration and kitchen equipment, including reach-in coolers, walk-in coolers and freezers, and commercial ice machines. For operations that want to avoid surprise breakdowns altogether, a preventative maintenance plan catches low charge, restrictions, and worn components before they cascade into a no-cool emergency.
