Walk-In Cooler Repair in Austin: Iced Evaporator Coil and Refrigerant Leaks

June 25, 2026 — Austin, TX
Setpoint Services was called to an Austin restaurant where the walk-in cooler had stopped holding temperature. On arrival, our technician found the evaporator coil completely iced over — a classic symptom that points to a refrigerant or flow problem rather than the cooler simply wearing out. A full diagnostic traced the trouble to two separate faults working together.
Diagnosis: A Frozen Evaporator Coil with Two Root Causes
When a walk-in evaporator coil ices over solid, cold air can no longer circulate through the box, so the cooler climbs out of safe temperature even while the compressor runs nonstop. Here the ice was being driven by two issues at once:
- A restricted liquid line filter drier choking off proper refrigerant flow to the evaporator
- Two refrigerant leaks in the evaporator coil itself, bleeding off charge and starving the system
Either problem alone will frost a coil; together they guarantee it. Diagnosing both before touching a wrench is what keeps a repair from turning into a repeat visit a week later.
The Repair: Leak Sealing, Drier Replacement, and a Clean Recharge
With the faults confirmed, our technician carried out a complete refrigeration repair:
- Repaired both refrigerant leaks in the evaporator coil
- Replaced the restricted liquid line filter drier to restore full refrigerant flow
- Pressure tested the system to confirm the repairs held
- Evacuated the system to pull out moisture and non-condensables
- Recharged with approximately 2 pounds of R-404A refrigerant
- Verified operation, logging roughly 32 PSIG suction and 270 PSIG head pressure
With the coil clear and the charge corrected, the walk-in temperature began dropping steadily before our technician left the site — confirming the box was cooling normally again.

Repair or Replace: A Word on Aging Refrigeration Systems
The existing Copeland condensing unit and Heatcraft evaporator on this cooler are both well along in age and condition. We repaired the system and got it cooling, but with leaks now showing up in the coil itself, we recommended the operator plan for a full walk-in cooler refrigeration system replacement as the most reliable long-term fix. Replacing an aging system outright is often cheaper over time than chasing one refrigerant leak after another — and it removes the risk of a surprise failure in the middle of a busy service.
Commercial Refrigeration Service Across the Austin Area
From walk-in coolers and freezers to reach-in coolers, commercial ice machines, and the rest of the kitchen, Setpoint Services keeps Austin-area operators cold and compliant.
