Setpoint Services responded to a commercial refrigeration service call at a 7-Eleven in San Marcos, Texas after the customer reported an open-air refrigerated display case was not maintaining proper product temperature. A complete diagnostic inspection was performed on the Heatcraft condensing unit, Vendo refrigerated merchandiser, and Copeland scroll compressor system.
During the inspection, our technician found the condenser coil completely clogged with dirt and debris, severely restricting airflow and reducing refrigeration efficiency. One condenser fan motor had failed, preventing proper heat rejection. The compressor run capacitor was tested and measured only 20 µF on a 40 µF rated capacitor, confirming capacitor failure. The compressor contactor also showed signs of wear and was recommended for replacement to improve system reliability.
A large oil stain was observed on the front left side of the condensing unit, indicating a possible refrigerant leak within the sealed refrigeration system. Due to the failed condenser fan motor and electrical components, the refrigeration system could not operate long enough to accurately verify refrigerant charge, superheat, subcooling, or overall cooling performance.
Setpoint Services recommended replacing the failed condenser fan motor, compressor run capacitor, and compressor contactor, followed by a complete condenser coil cleaning. Once the electrical repairs are completed, the refrigeration system should be restarted and tested to verify refrigerant charge, operating pressures, superheat, subcooling, and overall performance. If the oil residue is confirmed to be from an active refrigerant leak, leak detection and sealed-system repairs should be completed.
Regular commercial refrigeration preventative maintenance, including condenser coil cleaning, electrical component inspections, and refrigerant system performance testing, helps prevent equipment failures, reduce energy consumption, and extend the life of refrigerated display cases and walk-in refrigeration systems throughout San Marcos and Central Texas.
