An open-air refrigerated merchandiser is the most demanding case in any convenience store. There is no door between the product and the room — only a curtain of cold air. When that case starts drifting warm, the operator usually notices it the same way this one did: the product on the shelves simply stopped feeling cold enough.
Setpoint Services was called out to a San Marcos convenience store after the operator reported that an open-air refrigerated display case was no longer holding proper product temperature. What our technician found is a good illustration of why refrigeration diagnostics sometimes have to happen in two stages — and why rushing the second stage produces bad numbers and wasted money.
Equipment Inspected
A complete diagnostic inspection was performed across the full refrigeration system serving the case:
- Heatcraft condensing unit
- Vendo refrigerated merchandiser
- Copeland scroll compressor
What the Inspection Found
The case had not failed for one reason. It had four faults stacked on top of each other, every one of them working against heat rejection:
- Condenser coil completely clogged with dirt and debris, severely restricting airflow and cutting refrigeration efficiency
- One condenser fan motor failed, leaving the system unable to reject heat properly
- Compressor run capacitor failed — tested at 20 µF against a 40 µF rating, roughly half its designed capacitance
- Compressor contactor showing wear, recommended for replacement to protect system reliability
Our technician also documented a large oil stain on the front left side of the condensing unit. Oil residue on a sealed system is a signal worth taking seriously — refrigerant carries oil with it, so where oil escapes, refrigerant is usually escaping too. That said, an oil stain is an indicator, not a verdict. It points to a possible leak within the sealed refrigeration system that has to be confirmed with proper leak detection before anyone starts opening lines.
Why the Diagnosis Stopped Where It Did
This is the part worth understanding, because it is where a lot of refrigeration service goes wrong.
With a failed condenser fan motor and a run capacitor at half its rated value, the system could not run long enough or stably enough to produce meaningful numbers. Refrigerant charge, superheat, subcooling, and overall cooling performance are all measured against a system operating at steady state. A system fighting a dead fan motor and a weak capacitor is not at steady state — it is short-cycling and running hot, and every reading it produces is a reading of the electrical fault, not the refrigerant charge.
Adding refrigerant to a system in that condition is guesswork. It is also how a case ends up overcharged on top of every other problem it already had. The disciplined move is to correct the electrical side first, let the system stabilize, and then measure.

Recommended Scope of Repair
Setpoint Services recommended the following work, in this order:
- Replace the failed condenser fan motor
- Replace the compressor run capacitor
- Replace the worn compressor contactor
- Complete a full condenser coil cleaning to restore airflow and heat rejection
- Restart the system and verify refrigerant charge, operating pressures, superheat, subcooling, and overall cooling performance
- If the oil residue is confirmed to come from an active leak, perform leak detection and sealed-system repairs
Sequencing matters here. Clean the coil and replace the electrical components, and the system finally gets a fair chance to show what its refrigerant charge actually looks like. Skip that step and you are troubleshooting a moving target.
What This Case Should Have Caught Earlier
Almost everything on that list is a maintenance item, not a repair item — right up until it isn’t.
A condenser coil does not clog overnight. A run capacitor does not drop from 40 µF to 20 µF in a week; it drifts down over months while the compressor works harder and draws more current to compensate. A contactor wears gradually. Every one of these is visible and correctable on a routine preventative maintenance visit, at a fraction of what an emergency call plus product loss costs. Regular condenser coil cleaning, electrical component inspection, and refrigerant performance testing prevent equipment failures, reduce energy consumption, and extend the service life of refrigerated display cases and walk-in systems.
The clogged coil in this case is also the likely root cause of everything downstream. Restricted airflow drives head pressure up, which pushes the compressor and condenser fan motor to run hotter and longer than designed — which is precisely how fan motors and capacitors die early.
