Heatcraft Walk-In Cooler Low Refrigerant & Leak Diagnosis 08.31.26
Setpoint Services performed commercial walk-in cooler repair and refrigeration diagnostics at Little Caesars on Anderson Mill in Austin, Texas. The Heatcraft R-404A walk-in refrigeration system was found approximately five pounds low on refrigerant. Five pounds of R-404A were added to restore the system charge and improve refrigeration operation while additional system problems were identified.
Inspection of the Heatcraft evaporator found the coil extremely dirty, with substantial buildup restricting airflow and reducing heat-transfer efficiency. Both the evaporator and condenser coils were recommended for a thorough cleaning. The installed evaporator also appeared to be configured as a freezer-style evaporator, raising concern about whether the evaporator and condensing unit were properly matched for the walk-in cooler application.
Significant oil residue was also discovered around the low-pressure control and associated refrigeration piping. Combined with the system being approximately five pounds low on R-404A, these conditions indicated a potential refrigerant leak. A complete commercial refrigeration leak search was recommended because adding refrigerant only restores the charge temporarily and does not correct the source of refrigerant loss.
An additional issue was identified with the discharge-line temperature control, which had become disconnected from the compressor discharge line. Follow-up service was recommended to deep clean the refrigeration coils, locate and repair the refrigerant leak, inspect the low-pressure control area, correct the discharge-line temperature control, verify equipment compatibility, and confirm proper walk-in cooler operation.
