Service Date: April 3, 2026 — Austin, TX Setpoint Services responded to a commercial HVAC service call in Austin, TX where a rooftop unit had stopped providing cooling. The equipment on-site was a Ruud/Rheem Commercial Series packaged rooftop unit (Model: RKKB-A180CL25E). Upon diagnosis, our technician confirmed that the Copeland Scroll compressor on Circuit #3 had suffered a terminal blowout — a catastrophic failure mode that destroyed the electrical connection to the compressor windings and resulted in complete refrigerant loss, leaving that circuit fully inoperable.

What We Found

Terminal burnout is one of the more severe compressor failure modes in commercial refrigeration and HVAC systems. When a scroll compressor terminal blows out, refrigerant escapes rapidly and the system loses all charge on the affected circuit.
