Setpoint Services performed commercial refrigeration repair on two Marc Refrigeration SF-10R E reach-in coolers at Southern Steer Butcher in Cedar Park, Texas. Both coolers, which share a Heatcraft R-448A condensing unit, were experiencing severe evaporator icing and difficulty maintaining proper temperature. Inspection found the first unit’s serpentine coil frozen over and the second unit’s evaporator coil frozen over.

Both refrigeration units were completely de-iced, and technical support was contacted to evaluate the controller configuration. The defrost parameters were found incorrectly set at zero on both units. Setpoint Services corrected the controllers to initiate defrost every six hours for 30 minutes with an 18°F coil-temperature termination setting. Both units were forced through defrost and verified to pump down and operate properly.

After repairs, the R-448A system operated at approximately 58 PSI suction and 280 PSI discharge with a full, clear sight glass. Both reach-in coolers returned to normal operation and reached approximately 36°F before departure.
