Setpoint Services performed extensive commercial refrigeration repair on an Oscartielle refrigerated display case at Cold Stone Creamery in College Station, Texas. The approximately 22-year-old R-404A system had extensive previous electrical modifications, bypassed controls, and multiple operating problems. The altered control wiring and components were removed, the electrical control system was redesigned and rewired, and a new universal refrigeration controller and contactor were installed to properly control the compressors, refrigeration operation, and defrost sequence.
Both condenser coils were severely clogged and were thoroughly cleaned to restore airflow and heat rejection. A damaged right-side condenser fan motor was also found intermittently shutting down, causing excessive head pressure and a loud hissing noise from the compressor. The failed condenser fan motor was replaced, the drain pan was cleaned, and refrigerant operating pressures were checked and appeared normal following the repairs.
The hot-gas defrost sequence was tested and the maximum defrost duration was adjusted to 15 minutes. An existing issue remains with the front evaporator coil because a previous technician had removed one of the hot-gas defrost solenoids from the system, leaving only the rear coil with active hot-gas defrost. Due to the equipment's age, condition, and extensive previous modifications, replacement of the refrigerated display case was recommended as a long-term solution.
