Setpoint Services performed commercial walk-in freezer refrigeration repair at Texas Baptist Children's Home in Round Rock, Texas, servicing a Heatcraft CHT031L6BF condensing unit and Heatcraft LET120BK evaporator operating on R-404A refrigerant.
Upon arrival, the technician discovered that the walk-in freezer evaporator coil was heavily iced over, affecting refrigeration performance. The evaporator coil was completely de-iced, and the system was restarted to investigate the cause of the excessive ice accumulation.
Electrical diagnostics identified a defective contactor stuck in the closed position, allowing the refrigeration system to continue operating during the programmed defrost cycle. The faulty contactor was replaced, and the defrost controls were tested to verify proper operation.
Additional refrigeration testing revealed evaporator superheat measuring approximately 12°F. The thermostatic expansion valve (TXV) was adjusted to improve refrigerant flow and evaporator performance, reducing measured superheat to approximately 2–5°F.
Following the repairs, the walk-in freezer was monitored to verify cooling performance. The freezer temperature decreased to approximately 17°F before departure and continued dropping as the refrigeration system operated.
The defective contactor was successfully replaced, the evaporator coil was cleared of ice, and the TXV was adjusted. The commercial walk-in freezer was cooling at the completion of service, although final temperature pull-down to its programmed setpoint had not yet been verified.
