Setpoint Services responded to an emergency commercial refrigeration service call for DO&CO Catering Services at Circuit of the Americas in Del Valle, Texas. The equipment was a NordCap Nortech 20 P commercial blast chiller, model 5T2B-203P-20L02, equipped with a Frascold D4-19.1Y compressor and operating on R-452A refrigerant.
The customer reported intermittent operation, with the blast chiller compressor repeatedly cycling on and off. Initial troubleshooting suggested a possible low-pressure control issue, although this was not confirmed. The refrigerant sight glass appeared full, and compressor oil was visible in the oil sight glass.
During refrigeration diagnostics, discharge pressure measured approximately 300 PSI. Inspection revealed substantial oily buildup, dirt, and debris restricting airflow through the condenser coil. The condenser was thoroughly cleaned using professional coil cleaner, improving heat rejection and reducing discharge pressure by approximately 50 PSI, from 300 PSI to 250 PSI.
Following cleaning and diagnostic testing, the blast chiller was monitored through normal operation. The equipment successfully reached its programmed temperature setpoint and cycled off properly. The intermittent cycling issue was no longer occurring during observation, and the blast chiller was operating normally at the time of departure.
Because the equipment is frequently relocated as part of a mobile commercial kitchen operation, Setpoint Services recommended careful handling and securing the blast chiller during transportation to prevent damage to refrigerant piping, connections, and refrigeration components. Regular condenser coil cleaning was also recommended to maintain reliable cooling performance.
