Setpoint Services performed commercial refrigeration repair on an older True Manufacturing GDM-69 three-door reach-in cooler at Parmer Lane Tavern in Austin, Texas. The aging R-134a refrigeration system was experiencing poor to no cooling due to a compressor that was struggling to start. Because of the age and condition of the equipment, compressor replacement had already been recommended and quoted; however, an attempt was made to temporarily restore the existing compressor and keep the cooler operational.
A hard-start kit was installed on the existing compressor, successfully getting the compressor running again. The condenser coil was thoroughly cleaned to improve heat rejection, standing water was removed from the drain pan, and the condensate drain lines were cleared and checked for proper drainage. After the repair, the refrigeration system was restarted and monitored, with the cabinet temperature dropping below 50°F and continuing to cool before departure.
Due to the age of this True commercial refrigerator and the condition of the compressor, the hard-start kit should not be considered a guarantee of long-term compressor reliability. Compressor replacement was quoted in case the existing compressor fails again, while replacement of the complete reach-in cooler was also recommended rather than continuing to invest in major repairs to aging equipment. An existing piercing access valve on the suction line was additionally noted as a potential current or future refrigerant leak point. The cooler was operational and cooling when Setpoint Services completed the visit.
