A walk-in cooler that stops holding safe temperature is not a next-morning problem. What the After-Hours Diagnosis Found

Initial diagnostics pointed at two conditions working against the system at the same time:

  • A low refrigerant charge. There was not enough refrigerant in circulation for the system to pull the box down and hold it there.
  • A heavily contaminated condenser coil. The coil was packed with dirt and debris, choking airflow and crippling the system’s ability to reject heat. On a July evening in Central Texas, that alone will cost a cooler serious capacity.

The coil was cleaned thoroughly first. That order matters: heat rejection has to be restored before any charge reading means anything, because a system fighting a blocked condenser produces pressures that describe the airflow problem rather than the refrigerant level.

Why the First Visit Ended With a Partial Charge

With the coil clean, refrigerant went in — and the service truck ran out at one pound. The system needed more than the truck had left on board.

There are two ways to handle that moment. One is to call it good, note that the box is colder than it was, and move on. The other is to be straight about it: the system is running, it is not correctly charged, and we are coming back tomorrow to finish. We scheduled the return visit for the following day.

The Return Visit: When the Gauges and the Sight Glass Disagree

On the return, the system was rechecked before anything was added. The gauges read:

  • Suction pressure: 50 PSI
  • Discharge pressure: 280 PSI

Those are not alarming numbers. A tech in a hurry could look at that pair, note that the box was cold, and leave. But the liquid line sight glass was still flashing — bubbles moving through the glass instead of a solid, still column of liquid. Flashing means vapor is reaching the metering device, and vapor in the liquid line means the system does not have a full charge no matter how reasonable the gauges look.

Two additional pounds of refrigerant went in, bringing the total added across both visits to three pounds. The system then stabilized at:

  • Suction pressure: 60 PSI
  • Discharge pressure: 320 PSI
  • Liquid line sight glass: full and clear

The cooler was monitored until it pulled the box temperature back down to normal operating conditions, and it was running correctly at departure.

Cooling Restored Is Not the Same as Leak Repaired

Here is the part that matters most for the operator. A sealed refrigeration system does not consume refrigerant. It does not burn it off, and it does not need topping up on a schedule. If a system is three pounds low, those three pounds went somewhere — which means there is an active leak in the circuit right now.

We recommended a comprehensive leak search and repair to locate the source. Skipping that step buys a predictable sequence: the charge bleeds back down over weeks or months, the box drifts warm again, and you pay for another emergency call and another cylinder of refrigerant — usually during a rush, because that is when a marginal system finally gives up. Finding the leak once costs less than charging the system three times.
