Emergency Walk-In Freezer Coil De-Icing in Austin TX

When a commercial walk-in freezer stops holding temperature, the clock starts on a freezer full of product. Setpoint Services was dispatched for an emergency call at an Austin food-service operation where the walk-in freezer had drifted out of spec. The system was already under another provider for full diagnostic and repair work, so our visit was scoped to one thing: restore temporary freezer operation and get the box cooling again while the larger repair is sorted out.
The Emergency Call: A Freezer Losing Temperature
The operator reported a walk-in freezer that would not maintain proper temperature. On arrival, our technician found the evaporator coil completely iced over — a solid sheet of frost that was choking airflow and crippling refrigeration performance. A fully iced coil cannot move cold air across the box, so the system runs nonstop while temperatures keep climbing.
What We Did: Full Evaporator De-Icing
To restore cooling, our technician disassembled the evaporator section and fully de-iced the coil, clearing the frost that was blocking airflow. Once the coil was clean and the system restarted, we confirmed the unit was pulling temperature back down.
- Disassembled the evaporator section and fully de-iced the coil
- Restored airflow across the walk-in freezer evaporator
- Verified the condensing unit pumped down properly during the defrost cycle
- Confirmed defrost heaters energized, measuring roughly 6 amps draw
- Restarted the system and confirmed temporary cooling operation
Operating data after de-icing on R449A refrigerant: suction pressure 34 PSI, sight glass full and clear, and an evaporator temperature back to approximately 0°F after restart. Temporary cooling was restored before our technician left the site.
Additional Issues Identified On Site
De-icing the coil bought the box time, but the root causes of the ice-over run deeper. During the visit our technician documented several contributing conditions the operator will need to address for any lasting fix:
- Walk-in freezer door damaged and not sealing properly
- Excessive moisture infiltration entering the freezer box
- Box heavily overstocked, restricting airflow around the evaporator
- Existing refrigeration equipment appears undersized for the current product load
- Deteriorated and missing suction line insulation on the roof
- A long refrigeration line set adding heat load to the system
- TXV sensing bulb loose and improperly mounted on the suction line
- Defrost clock settings improperly adjusted by previous parties
Defrost System Inspection
The defrost schedule had been modified — likely an attempt to compensate for the chronic icing rather than fix it. Our technician documented three 45-minute defrost cycles spread through the day plus one extended overnight cycle of roughly 2.5 hours. Over-driving the defrost cycle masks an evaporator problem; it does not solve it, and it costs energy every day it runs that way.
Our Recommendations
To address the icing at the source, we recommended quoting a replacement TXV and properly securing the sensing bulb to restore correct superheat control. Alongside that, the operator should plan to correct the damaged door seal, relieve the overstocking and airflow restriction, repair the deteriorated roof insulation, and evaluate the overall system load. Because of the product load, failing door seals, deteriorated insulation, airflow restrictions, and suspected TXV issues, no guarantee can be made on continued freezer performance until those underlying conditions are corrected. A preventative maintenance program is the cheapest way to keep a box like this from getting back to an emergency.

A Second Austin Freezer, a Different Cause — August 9, 2026
Not every iced-up freezer has a story that complicated. In August we were called to a South Austin restaurant with ice forming at the evaporator drain, and the diagnosis came down to a single dead component.
Every walk-in freezer has the same built-in problem: defrost melts the frost off the coil, and that meltwater then has to travel out of a box held well below freezing. A heated condensate drain line is what keeps it liquid on the way out. When the heater on that line quits, the water refreezes partway through, the line plugs with ice, and meltwater backs up into the drain pan and the coil section. The freezer starts icing up again before the next defrost cycle even runs.
That is what had happened here. The condensate drain-line heater had failed. The repair itself was straightforward:
- Stripped the old insulation off the copper condensate drain line
- Fitted and secured the replacement drain-line heater along the line
- Re-insulated the drain line and secured it with tape and zip ties
- Refastened the line to the freezer wall and wired the new heater back to the evaporator
- Tested the defrost clock, which came back operational
The last step is the one that matters most. A drain-line heater can be installed perfectly and still be dead, so our technician put a meter on it: 0.23 amps. That reading is the difference between a heater that is mounted and a heater that is working. With the draw confirmed, the freezer was returned to service and verified operating normally.
Two Austin freezers, two very different visits. One needed a system-level conversation about door seals, load, and superheat control. The other needed one part and a meter reading. Telling them apart quickly is most of the job on commercial walk-in freezer service.
