Hoshizaki Ice Machine Repair in Georgetown, TX: Slow Ice from a Fouled Condenser

July 23, 2026 — Georgetown, TX
Not every ice machine problem announces itself. There was no alarm and no fault code on this one — just a commercial kitchen in Georgetown noticing the bin wasn’t filling the way it used to. Setpoint Services was called out to service a Hoshizaki KMD-505MAJ, and the cause turned out to be one of the most common and most preventable failures in commercial refrigeration.
The Complaint: Ice Production Falling Off
The operator reported the machine wasn’t producing ice properly. That phrasing matters. A machine that stops cold gets attention immediately; a machine that quietly makes less ice every week often runs for months before anyone calls. By the time it becomes an obvious problem, the equipment has usually been working far harder than it should for a long stretch.
What We Found: A Condenser Choked with Dirt
On inspection, the condenser coil was heavily impacted with dirt and debris — enough to significantly restrict airflow through the condenser. In a kitchen environment, that buildup is normal wear, not neglect. Airborne grease, flour, dust, and lint find the coil and stay there.
The consequences follow a predictable chain:
- Restricted airflow means the condenser can’t reject heat effectively.
- Condensing temperatures climb above where they should sit.
- Refrigeration efficiency drops, and the freeze cycle stretches longer to make the same slab of ice.
- Daily ice output falls, and the compressor runs hotter for more hours per day.
That last point is the expensive one. A dirty coil doesn’t just cost you ice — it shortens the life of the most costly component in the machine.
The Service: Restoring Airflow and Heat Rejection
Our technician performed a thorough condenser coil cleaning to clear the restriction and restore proper airflow and heat rejection, then ran the unit through a complete freeze and harvest cycle to confirm the machine responded. Refrigeration system performance was tested both before and after the service so the improvement could be measured rather than assumed.

Proving the Fix: Pressures, Freeze Time, and Harvest
Cleaning a coil is easy. Proving it worked is the part that separates a service call from a guess. After the cleaning, the numbers were documented:
- Suction pressure: approximately 55 PSIG during the freeze cycle.
- Discharge pressure: approximately 275 PSIG during the freeze cycle — within Hoshizaki’s recommended operating range for the ambient conditions on site.
- Harvest pressures: verified and normal.
- Freeze cycle time: 31 minutes, inside the manufacturer’s published specification.
- Harvest: completed normally, with the machine dropping ice properly.
Those readings confirmed the diagnosis. Condenser airflow restriction was the primary cause of the production issue, and with the coil clear, the refrigeration system returned to spec without a single part being replaced. The machine was operating normally at departure.
Why Condenser Cleaning Belongs on a Schedule
This job is a good argument for preventative maintenance over reactive service. Routine condenser coil cleaning maximizes ice production, improves energy efficiency, keeps compressor operating temperatures down, and heads off the unexpected breakdowns that tend to land during a Friday dinner rush. For restaurants, hotels, bars, and food service facilities running a machine hard through a Texas summer, a scheduled cleaning costs a fraction of what an emergency call and lost ice do.
Setpoint Services will follow up with this customer over the next several days to confirm the machine continues producing ice normally.
