When a commercial walk-in cooler stops holding temperature, the clock starts ticking on every case of product inside it. A Round Rock bar recently called Setpoint Services after staff noticed their walk-in cooler was struggling to keep up — box temperatures were creeping above safe storage levels and the system was running harder than it should. Our technician was dispatched to diagnose the Heatcraft refrigeration system and bring it back under control.
The Problem: Restricted Airflow and Drainage
The cooler was built around a Heatcraft evaporator paired with a Copeland compressor. On inspection, two issues stood out immediately:
- A heavily clogged condenser coil. Dust and debris had packed the coil, choking off airflow and forcing the system to work overtime while losing cooling capacity.
- A clogged condensate drain line. Debris in the line was preventing proper drainage, which can lead to standing water, ice buildup, and sanitation problems inside the box.
Both conditions are classic causes of a walk-in cooler that simply can’t keep up — especially during a Central Texas spring when ambient temperatures climb.
What We Did On Site
- Performed a thorough condenser coil cleaning to restore full airflow
- Cleared the clogged condensate drain line to bring back proper drainage
- Checked refrigerant pressures and overall system performance
- Verified sight glass condition (a full sight glass was observed during operation)
- Evaluated evaporator and compressor operation under load
After the work was complete, the system recorded an approximate 110°F discharge saturation temperature and a 20–25°F suction saturation temperature, with a full sight glass throughout. Most importantly, the box temperature was pulled back below 40°F before our technician left the site.

What We Found Underneath the Surface
Cleaning the coil and clearing the drain solved the immediate problem, but our inspection revealed several installation shortcuts from a previous setup worth addressing for long-term reliability:
- The system was not configured as a proper pump-down system, which helps protect the compressor and manage refrigerant during off cycles.
- There was no defrost clock installed to manage scheduled defrost cycles.
- There was no liquid line solenoid valve — a key component for a true pump-down configuration.
- Undersized thermostat wiring was being used to carry 24V control voltage and cycle the system, which is not ideal for reliable operation.
Our Recommendations
To get this walk-in cooler operating the way it should — and to head off future breakdowns — we discussed the following upgrades with the owner:
- Install a defrost clock
- Install a liquid line solenoid valve
- Convert the system into a proper pump-down configuration
- Replace the digital thermostat with a mechanical thermostat for more reliable control
